Job Description:

We are seeking an energetic and skilled senior-level planning professional to provide municipal and environmental planning, permitting and project management expertise as we develop and execute a wide variety of projects. Typical projects may include planning support for small town clients, town center planning and redevelopment, grant writing, land use planning and permitting, park planning and environmental analysis. Our planning work is varied, and we frequently delve into unfamiliar terrain with new opportunities and challenges. Most of our work is tailored to the individual needs of our clients and their communities; it often entails inquiry and exploration to identify optimal strategies, recommendations, and outcomes. The ideal candidate will demonstrate independence and initiative and be able to cultivate new relationships while sustaining and strengthening existing relationships. They are a natural problem solver and consensus-building, with an appreciation for pragmatic solutions even while stretching to reach aspirational goals.

Job Duties:

  • Manage a variety of land use, permitting, environmental, and transportation planning projects and tasks
  • Provide on-call planning support for municipal clients
  • Meet with potential clients to identify and develop planning projects
  • Participate in marketing efforts and on interview teams
  • Lead the planning and permitting work for projects
  • Prioritize multiple projects and deadlines and communicate regularly with principals and clients
  • Supervise team members on project work
  • Consult with client and other SCJ disciplines on specifications and needs of projects
  • Perform site observations, including preparation of site visit reports and photographing project progress
  • Prepare plans, working drawings, and cost estimates
  • Manage day-to-day aspects of project and scope
  • Troubleshoot non-routine problems
  • Monitor financial status of projects
  • Develop strategies to address client budgets and needs
  • Ensure project deliverables are complete and accurate prior to passing along to client
  • Present projects and other information to elected officials, hearings examiners, and various other public forums
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Requires bachelor’s degree in planning or related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience and proficiency in planning and permitting work on behalf of private and public clients.
  • Experience presenting to elected officials and facilitating public meetings.
  • Strong verbal and writing skills to communicate clearly and respectfully with clients and coworkers.
  • Generally, has at least 5 years or more of progressively responsible planning experience
