Job Description: We have 3 exciting opportunities for an Associate Planner to join our team. The City of Bellevue, Washington is rapidly maturing from a sleepy suburb into a tech centric, vibrant, and diverse metropolitan city within the Puget Sound Region. The city's planning team is looking for creative planners with the technical expertise to help us shape and catalyze positive change.

Job Duties:
Demographer - This position requires you, the candidate to have a curious mind, technical prowess, research skills, an open, mature, and an inclusive view of prevailing social issues. We also need a demonstrated willingness to think beyond the usual or ordinary. Your ability to work across projects requiring diverse resolutions of data mapping (i.e. from accurate demographics to urban design conceptual thinking) would be considered a big plus. Specifically, this position requires robust GIS mapping skills, good graphic skills, knowledge and experience as a planner, and the ability to curate various data sources to keep the team and the city on top of its demographic profile(s) and economic growth statistics. This position is part of the Community Development Department's Strategic Planning Team.

Urban Designer - This position requires you, the candidate to have a curious mind, technical prowess, research skills, an open, mature, and diverse view of prevailing social issues. We also need a demonstrated willingness to think beyond the usual or ordinary. If selected as Associate Urban Designer, you will play an important role in the urban design and development planning of the above. Your work will require an ability to help us collectively explain in simple terms complicated issues in highly charged public settings. This assumes you have deep understanding of placemaking, urban design, spatial analysis, and 3D modeling. We expect your skills to allow you (and the team) to assemble packages containing a robust combination of words, numbers, graphics, and illustrations.

Comprehensive Planning - this position is part of our Comprehensive Planning Team. We conduct a broad range of work that includes comprehensive planning (annual plan amendments with a periodic update due in 2023), affordable housing, neighborhood area planning, regional policy advisories, and special initiatives as requested by City Council and City Manager's Office. This team also manages the city's Planning Commission.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year university in planning, urban planning, urban geography, environmental studies, public administration or a closely related field. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Five years of progressively responsible related experience in comprehensive and growth management planning at the state, regional or municipal level.
  • Alternatively, a clear equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required mix of knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Certification as a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), or American Institute of Architects (AIA) is preferred.
