Job Description: The Northwest Seaport Alliance (NWSA) is recruiting for a Sr. Planner to join our Planning & Logistics department. The position works closely with the Environmental, Commercial, Operations and Public Affairs teams.This is a senior-level professional position responsible for performing advanced level planning, analysis and logistics support services to NWSA and Port of Tacoma with an emphasis on port facility planning. These planning services may include, but are not limited to: transportation, land use, environmental, and infrastructure planning and analysis, port facility planning, grant coordination and acquisition, and project management oversight.The Sr. Planner will also provide project leadership and technical support in high-visibility planning initiatives at local, regional, state, and federal levels. The position supports the NWSA and Port Strategic Plans and influences regional transportation and land-use planning activities that impact NWSA and Port interests to ensure that they can fulfill their mission in the future.The Sr. Planner will have an emphasis in facility planning, but may also provide transportation planning and land use planning services as needed.

Job Duties: 

  • Plans, organizes and executes NWSA and Port of Tacoma Facility Planning services, including policy and procedure development.  Serves as a project manager on all aspects of planning projects and initiatives, including securing and managing the work of consultants.  Develops and manages associated project budget.
  • Conducts highly technical reviews, research, and analysis. Evaluates findings, identifies significant issues, determines options and develops staff recommendations. 
  • Develops and maintains strong external working relationships with community and governmental entities to influence regional development objectives. Collaborates with counterparts from other agencies and tribes to ensure adequate transportation system capacity, land use policy and regulatory decisions consider NWSA and Port of Tacoma needs.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with internal staff (Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma, and Northwest Seaport Alliance), especially those in Environmental, Commercial, Operations, and Public Affairs.
  • Advises NWSA and Port of Tacoma staff and assists in the development of effective working relationships with staff from the City of Tacoma (includes Tacoma Rail, Tacoma Power), City of Seattle, Pierce County, King County, Puget Sound Regional Council, the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, and others as needed.
  • Presents oral reports at public meetings; makes presentations to the Managing Members, Commissioners, Management Team, and Executives, as directed by the Director. May provide project tours and workshops.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Transportation, Urban Planning, business or related discipline required.
  • Master's Degree preferred.Minimum five (5) years of professional planning or related experience.
  • Experience with terminal planning projects and initiatives preferred.
  • AICP certification or the ability to pursue and successfully obtain AICP credentials (or equivalent credential) within 2 years is required.
