An aging America touches every aspect of community life. Changing attitudes and cultural shifts around the needs of an aging society reshape the complex web of societal expectations and institutional structures. The demographic shift puts a considerable strain on state budgets and demands novel initiatives responsive to local conditions. Making communities more aging-friendly is crucial, as businesses and policymakers grapple to stay ahead of the curve. Community aging-friendliness promotes social capital formation and strengthens the fabric of connectedness, while fostering transformations in physical infrastructure and systems. Aging-friendly communities adapt in constructive ways to enable people to mutually support one another to thrive.
In this session, speakers focus on disruptive advances in shifting the paradigm toward aging-friendly communities: (1) proactive aging-friendly strategy to maximize and launch new shared service/support system models focused on the well-being of the entire community; (2) innovative grants program that builds momentum for local change to improve livability for all ages with ready-to-go projects that can be replicated, scaled, and is affordable for other communities; and, (3) the pioneering initiative of the Age-Friendly University network, with academic institutions examining their roles in intergenerational exchange, workforce development, and institutional responsiveness to benefit students of all ages.
