Job Description:

The City of SeaTac is recruiting for a dynamic leader to become our next Community and Economic Development Director. This is a unique opportunity to serve a bustling city that hosts Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Alaska Airlines' corporate headquarters, Sound Transit light rail stations, and a vibrant tourism economy. Approximately 29,000 residents speaking 70 languages call SeaTac home. The new leader will act as a key adviser to the City Manager in driving the development of our thriving, diverse community through economic development, long-term and current planning, code compliance, permitting and building services. Job Duties:

  • Plan, lead, organize, and direct the activities, services, operations, budget, policy formulation and administration of the City's land use and planning, building services and development codes, construction and land development review, permit processing, code compliance and enforcement, and economic development programs.
  • Direct the development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of the department's long-range strategic plan and short-range goals and performance objectives; ensure completion of projects in accordance with established timelines and budget limitations; manage department operations to assure efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide dynamic leadership, vision and overall direction to the work of the Department staff; develop, implement and administer departmental policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with applicable municipal ordinances, state, county and federal laws and regulations, court decisions and established management principles and techniques.
  • Select, lead, supervise, train, assign, promote, motivate, evaluate, and discipline, as appropriate, the performance of assigned professional, paraprofessional, technical and administrative support personnel in accordance with established policies and procedures; resolve complaints related to department personnel and operations.
  • Oversee the research, analysis and implementation of policies, strategies, projects, and activities to enhance the City's economic development, redevelopment and tourism related programs and activities, including redevelopment strategies, new businesses recruitment, existing business retention.
Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in economic development, urban planning, public or business administration or a closely related field.

A Master's degree or other advanced degree is strongly preferred; and- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible administrative, supervisory and management experience in community development, urban planning, economic development or a closely related field, including a verifiable track record of success and a stable work history.

Or-In lieu of the above requirements, a successful candidate must possess an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the candidate with the knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively perform the essential duties and responsibilities of this position.
