Pitching Planning - A Home Run Opportunity for Washington Youth

Greg Huss, AICP, an active planner in Illinois, is using baseball to teach young people about urban planning and engage the next generation of planners. He admits, perhaps with a story similar to many of us, that he always wanted to be a planner because he would build small cities in his parents’ basement using Hot Wheels, but was unaware the profession existed. Huss recently spoke to seventh-graders about economic development, housing, infrastructure, equity, and affordability — all through the lens of finding a home for a Major League Baseball (MLB) expansion team.

You can read the Planning Magazine article about his experience and get suggestions from the APA Washington Youth in Planning Task Force for how you can engage younger students as prospects for the profession.

A huge congratulations to our Youth in Planning Task Force for being featured nationally!
