Lance Freeman is a Professor in the Urban Planning Program and t he Director of the doctoral program in Urban Planning at Columbia Universit y in New York City. His research focuses on affordable housing, gentrificat ion, ethnic and racial stratification in housing markets, and the relations hip between the built environment and well-being.
In A H aven and a Hell, Lance Freeman’s newest book (Columbia Universit y Press, April 2019), he examines how the ghetto shaped black America and b lack America shaped the ghetto. Freeman traces the evolving role of predomi nantly black neighborhoods in northern cities from the late nineteenth cent ury through the present day. At times, the ghetto promised the freedom to b uild black social institutions and political power. At others, it suppresse d and further stigmatized African Americans.
Dr. Freeman has publishe d several articles in refereed journals on issues related to neighborhood c hange, urban poverty, housing policy, urban sprawl, and residential segrega tion. Dr. Freeman is also the author of the book There Goes the Hood: V iews of Gentrification from the Ground Up (Temple University Press). H e also obtained extensive experience working with community development gro ups while working as a Community Development Coordinator for the North Caro lina Institute of Minority Economic Development and as a Research Associate at the Center for Urban and Regional Studies in Chapel Hill, North Carolin a. Dr. Freeman also has professional experience working as a City Planner f or the New York City Housing Authority, and as a budget analyst for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.
