Intercity Transit is currently seeking a Senior Planner to join our Planning Division. This position will perform professional-level transportation planning activities, including leading the development and implementation of short- and long-term plans for transit services (routing and scheduling), monitoring and reporting on performance, and land-use reviews. It is an exciting time to join IT!

Last November, the community overwhelmingly approved a ballot measure that will provide 50% more funding and will allow Intercity Transit to expand public transportation within the community. We are adding staff and investing in technology that will support more robust transit services, including bus rapid transit and innovative demand response programs. IT is nationally recognized and provides fixed-route transit, ADA paratransit, and vanpool services to the communities of Lacey, Tumwater, Olympia, and Yelm. Job Duties:

As a Senior Planner, you will:

  • Lead and perform advanced-level analytical work in evaluating, planning, developing, preparing and costing Intercity Transit services and facilities.
  • Develop short and long-term fixed-route service plans including service hours, schedule building and routing.
  • Monitor and analyze fixed-route service performance data and prepare reports.
  • Represent the agency as the primary technical contact. Partner with local development community to assist in staff review of site development proposals in support of public transportation inclusion.
  • Review and participate in requests for bus zone adjustments.
  • Organize and chair interdepartmental meetings for service change implementations; coordinate implementation of revisions to fixed route system with other departments.
  • Coordinate and monitor ridership audits including data onboard and video count data, prepare local and federal reports.
  • Collaborate with departments to review and update Foul Weather Emergency Plan, Transit Development Plan, and agency Strategic Plan.
  • Participate in public outreach efforts regarding service change information; prepare and conduct presentations to citizen groups, technical groups, and others.
Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:


Are you the one we are looking for?

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in Planning or related field.
  • You have three years professional transit planning experience; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • You are skilled in project management, analyzing data, and applying 3-dimensional thinking.
  • You are proficient in reviewing site development proposals and transit facilities requests.
  • You are experienced in concepts, development, and integration of transit services planning.
  • You must possess valid driver’s license, and be willing to submit to a criminal background investigation, the results of which must meet the agency’s hiring criteria.
