Job Description:

We seek a Senior Planner with at least 5 years of experience managing projects in land use planning. The candidate should have strong skills in at least one of the following: housing, demographic/market analysis, economic development, policy analysis, long-range land use planning, or programmatic environmental review. Prior consulting experience, particularly related to land use planning issues, is strongly preferred. The Planner will work on a range of engaging and community-building public policy and management consulting projects.

Experience/Qualifications/Knowledge/Skills:
  • The candidate must be knowledgeable about the principles and practices of planning and prepared to contribute in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively to meet deadlines and budgets.
  • Ability to lead project teams and manage complex planning studies.
  • Contribute to BERK as a learning organization, including mentoring colleagues.
  • Ability to gather relevant information and apply creative problem-solving skills to complex, often loosely defined planning problems.
  • Strong relationship-building and listening skills and an ability to engage diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting reports and products to policymakers, professionals, and the general public.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships with existing and potential clients, and for facilitating discussions among decision-makers.
Typical Functions
  • Performs advanced professional work related to a variety of planning assignments.
  • Develops complex comprehensive plans, subarea plans, and zoning or other development regulation amendments.
  • Provides professional planning assistance to communities on varied land use, housing, transportation, or other policy-based projects.
  • Conducts research and prepares reports on land use, physical, social, and economic issues.
  • Develops non-project State Environmental Policy Act documents in support of comprehensive plans and subarea plans.

Typical Knowledge

  • Advanced knowledge of the philosophies, principles, practices, and techniques of planning.
  • Well-developed knowledge of one or more planning disciplines such as land use, urban design, affordable housing, economic development, environmental planning, or other topics.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methodology, and practices of research and data collection.
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office, Sketchup, InDesign, and GIS.

Depending on experience, base salary for this position is $80,000 to 110,000, plus benefits, profit sharing, and merit-based bonuses.
