Job Description:

Spectacularly beautiful Skagit County stretches from the North Cascade mountains in Washington State to the shoreline of the Salish Sea, with a rich agricultural valley in between. Skagit County covers 1,920 square miles with a growing population of roughly 121,000. Mount Vernon, the largest city in the county with a population of around 33,000, is the county seat. Though it has traditionally been an agricultural center, manufacturing is also on the rise. Skagit County’s next Planning Director will be an exceptional communicator, a strong leader, and a creative thinker. The ideal candidate will be one who demonstrates a proactive approach to community outreach, an ability to clearly present recommendations to elected officials, and a knack for creating a shared vision for the community and the department. This position will lead staff toward common goals with measurable results and advocate for staff when needed. A seasoned planning professional, the next Director will serve as a mentor to staff and make cross training a priority goal in order to best serve the county. Based on the policies and direction of the Board of County Commissioners, the Planning Director sets customer service standards and directs the development of the work program, schedule, budget, and service policies and practices of the Department. This position regularly interfaces with elected officials, primarily the Board of County Commissioners, to interpret and direct adopted and implied policy. 


Requires a B.A. or B.S. degree (Master’s degree preferred) in planning, natural resources, engineering, public administration, business, or a related field, AND six years of progressively responsible related experience INCLUDING three years of management/supervisory experience, OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Preference given to those with AICP certification.
