Job Description:

The Permit Technician provides world-class customer service to members of the public as well as internal customers at the counter, over the phone, and via email. The permit technician also maintains financial records and budget documents related to assigned programs.

Job Duties:

The Permit Technician will provide general support to the Community Development staff and apply basic knowledge of land use and building codes and related rules, regulations, and procedures, as well as a thorough knowledge of office procedures, to perform research, gather data, and make decisions necessary to review and approve routine development permit applications. The ideal candidate will have direct experience with both Building Codes and Land Use Planning, but experience in one area will be sufficient as long as the successful candidate is willing and able to be trained in the other area in which they have no direct experience.


Knowledge of mathematical calculations necessary to determine permit fees. Ability to make routine mathematical calculations rapidly and accurately, understand and follow oral and written instructions, apply departmental policies. Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with contractors, fellow employees, supervisors, and the general public: Provide world class customer service. Ability to interpret legal documents pertaining to property. Ability to work effectively under stressful situations. Must possess and maintain current driving privileges in the State of Oregon. Graduation from high school and three (3) years of experience in a Planning or Building Department that included direct public contact in person, over the phone and via email. Considerable knowledge of recordkeeping and bookkeeping systems, office procedures and practices including computers and office machines. One (1) year experience utilizing computer applications (i.e., databases, spreadsheets, MS Word, etc.) related to area of assignment or any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. 

Supplemental Information:

Permit Technician certification by the International Code Council. Associates degree in Planning, Geography, GIS, Environmental Science or closely related field desired.
