SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS WORKING TOWARD AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND IMPROVING WALKABILITY
Paul Inghram, AICP, Scholarship Chair
Katherine Cote, a Masters of Urban Planning student at the UW, will be spending the summer exploring creative ways of preserving diversity and housing affordability in White Center as the population changes and affordability becomes increasingly scarce.
Katherine is working at the White Center Community Development Association (WCCDA) in this internationally diverse community just south of Seattle.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the state, Fred Evander is facilitating walkability meetings in Spokane’s East Central Neighborhood and helping Salem Lutheran Church develop low-income housing in Spokane. Fred is currently enrolled in Eastern Washington University’s Master of Urban and Regional Planning program.
The Washington Chapter of the APA is pleased to recognize Katherine Cote and Fred Evander and their commitment to community planning by honoring them as this year’s recipients of annual Washington-APA Scholarship awards.
Fred Evander grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, and received his undergraduate degree from The Evergreen State College. He has interned with Enterprise for Equity, a non-profit that helps low-income individuals start small businesses, and the City of Lacey. Presently, he holds an internship with the City of Cheney and plans to write a thesis on faith-based, low-income housing development in Spokane
Prior to attending the UW, Katherine graduated with a BA in Ecological Studies and German from Seattle University before accepting a Fulbright Grant to study the effects of military base closure on ecosystems in the former East Germany. Her research in Germany inspired her to pursue an advanced degree urban planning, focusing on planning for communities undergoing periods of transition.
The Washington Chapter of the American Planning Association awards an annual scholarship--based on a combination of academic achievement, commitment to the profession, and financial need--to a deserving planning student at each of the state’s two accredited planning programs—the University of Washington, Department of Urban Design and Planning and the Eastern Washington University, Department of Urban Planning, Public & Health Administration.
The Chapter congratulates Katherine and Fred on receiving the Washington-APA Scholarship awards and is proud of the commitment they have made to the planning profession.
