zHome’s purpose is to significantly accelerate the market for deep green production homes in the Pacific Northwest. zHome will meet the following environmental and cost performance benchmarks:

  • Verified, modeled, zero net energy/carbon neutral performance (the first of its kind in the U.S.);
  • 70% water use reduction over a typical home;
  • Durable and healthy materials, including a high percentage of FSC certified, natural, and local products;
  • Extensive low impact storm water techniques (including rain gardens, pervious pavement, green roofs, and heavily amended soil) which mimic the original forested state of development site;
  • 90% of all construction waste recycled or reused;
  • Built Green 5 Star Certified; and
  • Sale prices no great than 20% of similar townhome development in the area.

zHome is a public/private partnership spearheaded by the City of Issaquah, in conjunction with Built Green, Howland Homes, Ichijo USA, King County, Port Blakely Communities, Puget Sound Energy, and the WSU Energy Program. Howland Homes and Ichijo USA have formed a joint venture developing zHome as a market rate project. The other partner organizations have provided various aspects of technical, marketing, and financial support. Construction started on zHome in April. Groundwork, utilities, and foundations are almost complete, and vertical construction will start in September. The project will be completed next Spring.
