Governor Inslee has invited nominations for outstanding work by local governments and their partners on community planning and development. The awards have been an annual event since 2006.

Mayor Edward Murray is looking for two new Seattle Design Commission (SDC) members to fill two upcoming vacancies. One position is for a person with a professional background in urban planning, urban design, or landscape architecture. The second position is the at-large, or lay, position. This position has been held by a person in the real estate or development community. We are also interested in people working in the community development field. 

Both positions begin their terms in March 2017 and are eligible for up to two – two year terms.  SDC members are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The 10ÔÇÉmember commission is comprised of members of the architecture, engineering and urban design professions, including one member from the YMCA’s Get Engaged program.

Community Planning Assistance for Wildfire is excited to inform you that the 2016-2017 CPAW application process is now open! Applications can be accessed here and will be accepted until September 23, 2016, 5:00 pm MT.

During the 2016-2017 cycle, five communities will be selected based on a competitive application process. Selected communities are not responsible for any direct costs associated with CPAW services provided, but staff time to participate is required. All advice and assistance given to the community will be limited to services that are intended to reduce the risk from wildfires. Local governments will retain sole authority for implementation of any land use planning recommendations provided through CPAW. Any community in the U.S. can apply, and eligible jurisdictions include towns, cities, or counties having authority over local land use and zoning decisions (unincorporated communities require county application). Only applications demonstrating support from both the community’s planning and fire departments will be considered.

I hope you will consider attending the 2016 Community Tree Management Institute (CTMI), which will be held later this fall. CTMI is an intensive training and professional development course covering topics relevant to urban and community forestry management in the Pacific Northwest. The course has just been re-designed to emphasize peer-to-peer learning within three creative, dynamic, and engaging sessions:

  • Session 1: Community: 2 days’ worth of instruction covering communications, public outreach, partnership building, working with diverse audiences, working with tree boards and committees, and principles of leadership. (September 12-14 at the Alderbrook Resort and Hotel in Union, WA)
  • Session 2: Trees: 2 days’ worth of instruction covering technical foundations including tree I.D., pruning, planting, tree and site selection, utility arboriculture, and a tour of municipal forestry operations. (October 11-13 at the Hilton Vancouver Convention Center in Vancouver, WA, and other field sites in the Portland-Vancouver metro region)
  • Session 3: Management: 2 days’ worth of instruction covering days of principles and practices for managing trees such as ordinance development, tree inventory, management planning, and strategies to advance your urban forestry program. (November 8-10 at the Oregon Garden Resort and Conference Center in Silverton, OR)
Each Session will also require pre- and post-work in the form of readings, videos, presentations and participation in group discussions online. The tuition fee includes course materials, instruction, some meals, and transportation for the Session 2 field tour. Travel to-and-from each session, some meals and lodging costs will not be covered by tuition, although each facility will have a block of rooms available at government per diem rates. Individuals who are actively engaged in urban and community forestry management in Oregon and Washington are eligible for CTMI. The course will be limited to 30 participants; applications from municipal and other public employees will take precedence. Tribal and local government leaders and planners may be aware of historic preservation capital projects within their capital facilities plans and elsewhere in their communities. These projects may be eligible for state funding!

The Washington State Historical Society is proud to announce the next application cycle of the Heritage Capital Projects Program. The Grant Application for the 2017-2019 biennium and the 2017-2019 Application Workshop Schedule are available below. Six free three-hour Grant Application Workshops are planned for March and April 2016, and completed Grant Applications will be due May 19, 2016.

Through the competitive Heritage Capital Projects (HCP) grant program, the state provides up to ten million dollars each biennium to reimburse up to 33.33% of the eligible costs of selected heritage capital projects; and, grantees must provide at least 66.67% match. Applicants may request a minimum HCP grant of $7,500.00 and no more than $750,000.00. To meet the legislative intent of the HCP, applicants must demonstrate significant public benefit in the form of heritage interpretation and preservation, involve property that will be held a minimum of 13 years beyond the completion of the project and have the capacity and readiness to undertake and complete their capital project by June 30, 2019.
