Historic preservation seeks to preserve the ability of older (e.g., "historic") homes, building, and features to communicate the history of a place and the people who inhabited it. More recently, advocates of healthy living, sustainability, and green building have supported historic preservation and the retention and re-use of the older built environment, particularly when it is located in urban areas, as a way to reduce sprawl and other environmental impacts of new development.
