Job Description:

The City of Tacoma, Planning and Development Services Department, is recruiting for the Appointive position of Building Plans Examiner II. We are seeking a proven professional with a detailed work history with permit review activities related to building and structures. This is the second in a series of three Plans Examiner classifications. The successful applicant selected to fill this position will be required to apply an in-depth knowledge of residential building codes and commercial building codes. This position is also responsible for a review of residential (duplex and single-family dwellings) commercial/multifamily plan reviews, and other related permit applications. This position will interpret and apply the State and City codes for building, mechanical, plumbing, energy, and minor site grading/site development requirements. In addition, the position will understand the requirements of other disciplines and how this effects the reviews they are responsible for. 

Job Duties:

Review all types of permits for new construction, additions and remodels; review the plans for conformance with established codes and regulations, and establish criteria for correcting non-compliance of codes before building permits are issued. -Review commercial and multi-family plans, including remodels, plumbing and/or mechanical replacements. -Communicates additional application needs to applicants as needed. -Participate in pre-application and pre-construction meetings. -Provide information to architects, engineers and the public regarding code compliance and plan corrections. 


An equivalent combination to: Associates degree plus four years of experience directly related to planning, development and/or inspection; OR Bachelor's degree in engineering, science, architecture or related field from an accredited college or university and two years of experience directly related to planning, development and/or inspection; OR four years' experience as a Plans Examiner I; OR a minimum of 8 years' experience directly related to planning, development.


At least two (2) individual ICC certifications are required within one year of the hire date, with one of the certifications required to be a Residential or Commercial Plans Examiner. An ICC Code Official certification can be substituted for the two certifications.


Professional degree and work experience in a combination of the following: architecture, engineering, construction and ICC certifications.
