Senior Action Committee, WA-APASENIOR ACTION: Proponents of planning who have time and independence for voluntary work of investigation and advocacy. The Senior Action Committee (SAC), a part of Washington Chapter of American Planning Association (WA-APA) is a social policy and futures-oriented group founded in 1996. Its purpose is to retain the active interest of maturing planners who wish to continue contributing to the advancement of the profession. We believe that there is viable fellowship built around shared ideals, experience and currency of interest in the societal issues from the professional perspectives of planning. All maturing APA members are welcome to join. Most SAC members are retired from full-time service in the planning profession, or otherwise have the needed time or commitment to contribute. A focus of the group is investigation of policy issues in Washington State with planning content and implications. We believe it is of immensely practical importance to position our state to deal with environmental and development issues in a context of comprehensive planning for the 21st century. SAC positions are consistent with the current WA-APA strategic policies. Our members bring to discussion a broad background in functional area of physical design, law and administration, human requirements, natural conditions, and finance. We believe that it is important to give attention to the entire state as the venue for responsible goal setting and policy formation for achieving optimal distribution of the uses of land and resources. The importance of neighborhood and municipal planning is recognized as the mainstay of planning action. SAC believes that regional planning that is sensitive to natural features and resources deserves more public policy attention. SAC will continue the tradition of providing an experienced perspective to the Chapter by means of publishing papers expressing its point of view. In addition SAC undertakes projects, such as the report on “Planning in Washington State in the 21st Century” prepared for and presented at the 2001 annual Chapter conference in Yakima, and a recently completed analysis of the status of comprehensive planning in Washington State. Currently, SAC is undertaking a history project of planning in Washington State. SAC works to further goals contained in the Chapter Strategic Plan: "Increase visibility and recognition for APA. And respond to current events affecting planning and increase APA's role as a thought leader." Also SAC members stroll down memory lane. Interested, want to know more?
